With a name like 'Navajo,' it would have been nice to have something to fall back on, like a decent middle name, perhaps. However, this piece of information didn't seem to occur to Miss Madeline Moon, and at the age of sixteen, no one expected it to. She was young and naive, wet behind the ears with a shy smile and enough energy to power an army for decades. However, the downside of the naivety was that when the little stick displayed a heartbreaking pink plus sign, Madi set her jaw, lifted her chin and told the father that she didn't need him in the baby's life, but that wasn't to say she didn't want him in it. It didn't take much more than that for Chris Suzuki to disappear off to college, not even bothering to leave a note or a voicemail or even call the girl. He had had a life in front of him, and that life didn't involve a child. He'd hoped that his disappearance would tempt Madi into abortion, an option for the optionless. However, Madi was determined. She loved the little thing growing in her, even though it sort of looked like a dinosaur. She couldn't wait to dress it up in little baby clothes or have a little version of her to look after. It hadn't been planned, but hell, she wanted to keep it. The only problem was telling her parents... So she just didn't. No one had to know. If people didn't ask, Madi wouldn't have to tell. At least, until the school kicked her out, or until her parents hid her in the house from embarrassment. And when the baby was born and Madi was exhausted and crying from frustration, her parents refused to help her. If Madi considered herself responsible enough to decide what to do with Navajo, she could decide how to take care of him, of course. By his third birthday, Madi was nineteen and she couldn't take it anymore. Her parents had been great to let her stay in their house for so long, but Madi knew she could take care of herself and her son. So she rented an apartment and told her parents. They weren't happy when she told them she was moving to New Mexico, far from the reaches of Toronto, her hometown, but they let her.
She didn't do well at first, ending up in serious debt, but she got a job as a waitress and found a roommate who didn't mind children, a guy by the name of Holden Cooper. They'd tried dating for a few months until Holden came home with a boy and announced to Madi that he didn't think it was going to work out between the two of them, obviously. The two continued living together, even buying a house and sharing it between Holden, Madi and Holden's boyfriend, Tom, Holden taking on a father figure role in Navajo's life. Holden adored Navajo and Navajo adored Holden, even starting to call him 'Dad' by the time he was seven. It was Holden who gave Navajo permission to dye his hair bright red and purple before the first day of freshman year, and Holden who Navajo came out to first when he turned sixteen.
And it was Holden who answered the phone to a Mr Christopher Suzuki, calling from Trenton, California. He'd called Mr and Mrs Moon and been redirected to Madi at that number. Clueless, Holden handed the phone over to eighteen year old Navajo, who took the phone into his room and talked for hours with the father who he wasn't sure he wanted to dare to actually believe in. Chris had been calling for Madi, of course and when Navajo had assured him that him and Madi had booked a plane to Trenton, California, Chris believed him. It wasn't until blue-mohawked, pierced and tattooed Navajo appeared at his father's suburban house that he let the real truth slip: Madi had no idea where he was or that Chris was even alive and if Chris dared tell her, Navajo would have no problem disappearing elsewhere. He had a saving's account. Chris was shocked, by showed Navajo to the boy's new bedroom, situated in between Jared and Rebecca, Navajo's half-siblings, who were twelve and ten respectively. Navajo felt awkward and uncomfortable at first, but by the time Navajo contacted his mom to let her know that he was safe, he'd warmed up to the family. He didn't exactly fit in with Chris's perfect suburban family, with his edgy style and tendency to paint his nails to match his outfit, and Chris was shocked as hell to find out that Navajo was gay and perfectly fine with that fact, but as the days ticked by, Navajo felt himself fall into another half of his life that he hadn't known existed. He called Chris Chris and still referred to Holden as his dad, but it was hard to miss the similarities between Chris and Navajo. They both had the same golden brown skin tone and dark brown eyes, even though Navajo's eyes looked more Korean like his mother's than Japanese like his father's. Both of them talked with their hands and hated shrimp. They both thought that the Ramones were epic and that the Ke$ha blasting from Rebecca's room needed to be stopped, for everyone's sake. They both liked fall and hated spring, but loved springtime thunderstorms. Chris would interrupt conversations and jump from topic to topic, a habit that Navajo himself had, but when Chris did it, it sounded natural. When Navajo did, it came off as rude.
