PHYSICAL APPEARENCE:
Dusty is short and incredibly thin. His skin clings to his bones in an eery way, and his eyes seem to bulge out of his skull. Dark brown hair falls wildly about his thin face, completely covering his ears and the tops of his eyes. Dusty’s skin is quite tan. His hands are calloused and he has a great deal of muscle strength, which emphasizes his small stature and light weight.

Dusty wears whatever clothing he can get his hands on. This usually consists of holey t-shirts that he’s pulled out of dumpsters and cleaned and poorly patched blue jeans. Dusty prides himself in being able to slip under the radar. His schoolwork is exceptional, but he doesn’t raise his hand in class and therefore doesn’t catch teachers’ attention very often. The only time that he gets anyone’s attention is when they read his writing or look at his artwork. It’s the only way he expresses himself.
Dusty is incredibly defensive. He hates being picked on for his size or for the fact that he is a cripple, and he has a fight-or-fight-harder instinct about him. When he’s angry, his rational goes out the door. HISTORY:
Dusty’s parents were never married. His mother was engaged to a man named Dwight O’Keefe, who spent great amounts of times overseas on business. When she became pregnant with Dusty, she hid it from Dwight, living with James while Dwight was overseas and planning a business trip of her own for when Dwight got back. She spent the last six months of her pregnancy away from her fiancé, and when Dusty was born, she gave him immediately to his father.
Annabelle continued her affair with James for several more years, even after she married Dwight. Whenever Dwight would go away on business, she would move in with James and Dusty for a short amount of time. Three years after Dusty was born, she became pregnant a second time. Once more she managed to hide the pregnancy, but this time she realized how dangerous the situation was. Soon after Hailey was born, Annabelle cut off all ties to James and to her children.
James took it very hard. Although he’d known all along that he was having an affair with a married woman, he always imagined her picking him over her husband. He was devastated when she left him, and he took to drinking his troubles away. As his depression escalated, Dusty, who was only a toddler at the time, was forced to spend more and more time taking care of his baby sister.
Eventually, a neighbor noticed the odd living situation and called a social worker. After a hearing, Dusty and Hailey were sent to live with their paternal grandfather. George Harrison was a hard military man with no patience for his idiot son’s bastard children. He was physically abusive, especially to Dusty who worked hard to protect Hailey from their grandfather’s wrath, often to his own detriment.
When Dusty was twelve years old, he came home from school to find his sister missing. He searched all night for her, but couldn’t find her. When his grandfather found out, he kicked Dusty out of the house, telling him that it was his fault that his sister had run off. Dusty was forced to make his way on the street.
It was late in the school year when his grandfather kicked him out, and he didn’t end up finishing off the school year. He spent the summer travelling by foot down the coast, stopping where he could to mow lawns or do other odd jobs to earn a bit of money. When September arrived, he found himself near Trenton. He enrolled in the school there, making phone calls and using the library to send emails from “his parents” in order to get his records moved from one school to another.
During this time, Dusty received an email from Hailey, his only contact with her since she’d run away. She told him that she was safe and that she had a good place to stay. Since then, Dusty has been in contact with his sister via email. They email each other a couple of times a week. Dusty has a P.O. Box set up in town where he receives letters from his school that affect him, and he forges his father’s signatures on any papers that need to be signed. He continues to work odd-jobs and to babysit where he can, but he doesn’t make nearly enough money to satisfy his needs. He spends most of his nights sleeping wherever he can find a concealed spot on the outside of town, cold and hungry.
